Put on your oxygen mask first

by Aditya Gir

Now that summer vacations are over and kids are back in school, it is time to refocus. We often postpone our own health and well-being for other "more important" matters. I always use the analogy of the oxygen masks on a flight. As they say, we need to put on our masks first before helping others.

Similarly, we need to take care of our own health before we take care of others. It may sound selfish, but if we don't take care of ourselves, we might end up being a burden on the same ones we are supposed to take care of in the first place. So, what's the point?

Most of us wait for some event in our lives to end before we say "now I can go back to doing Yoga". If it is a health issue or if one is traveling, that is understandable. Anything else is most likely an excuse. We should be careful that while we are taking care of other matters, we don't neglect our own health to such an extent that we take a few steps back and have to start all over again.

Worst yet, we forget how good Yoga is for our minds and bodies, and how good we feel when practicing regularly. Consistency is the key. Take care of yourself no matter what else comes your way. Make your health your first priority.
